Randomized
1. I can play, to one degree or another, the following instruments: bassoon, violin, tuba, flute, harp, recorder, saxophone, bass guitar, clarinet, and oboe. Also, I was in a band in high school. We called ourselves Emanon
2. My first bike was a dark purple Huffy, known around the neighborhood as the Purple Piss Pot.
3. I own 46 pairs of pants (2 are in a pile of clothes to get rid of, so soon it will be 44).
4. Earwigs are the only animal that really freak me out. I just did an image search for them. I wish I hadn't. OK, snakes that can swim freak me out also. Land snakes are fine.
5. I've had a thing for subway systems ever since I started taking SEPTA to school in the 5th grade. In 6th grade I decided I wanted to see every station on the line I took to and from school. So one day I got on the local, rode to one end of the line, then rode to the other end of the line, then back to my normal stop. And then still had to wait for a bus to get me home. I didn't get there until close to 9:00. My parents were upset with me.
6. I'm unsure whether I love my watch-tan so much because I can't stand not wearing a watch, or I always have to wear a watch because I love my watch-tan so much.

I Am 2009, And So Can You!
I've recently completed my January 1st, 2009 blog entry à la Jobonga:
PS. A little late, but I have another challenge for you to ignore. You are going to make some resolutions and predictions for 2008 and you are going to set it to post one year from New Year’s Day on January 1, 2009. Then we can all wait a whole year for the big reveal. I plan to write mine as if my 2009 self is quizzing my 2008 self with questions like: Who is president? Where am I moving after graduating two weeks ago? Do I have a job? Do I have a chance in hell? What’s it like to be so awesome? This will be cool because if Huckabee is elected president and I shoot myself, I can creep everyone out by posting posthumously.
Needless to say it is both trenchant, insightful, and emotional; 2009 looks to be a jumentous year!
I do need to admit one thing. I know this was supposed to be written on New Years. Well it wasn't, deal with it. I'm going to go ahead and say that any time in January is acceptable (procrastinators take note, you still have time). The problem is that I've already let the events of the past 11 days influence my predictions: most notably I've had to dolefully accept that Kucinich, once again, will not win the Democratic nomination. My post has been adjusted appropriately.

Coolosity
To begin, I have a bit of commentary on the Essay Topic, "Prove how uncool you are", itself. I find this formulation suspect. Do we get a merit badge or something if we score high enough on the uncoolometer? And more importantly, who's operating the uncoolometer. Hopefully not the lame-oids that created this list that Lucia found:
I got a list on some x-box internet site from teenage boys (it includes many many many references to their genitals), sunglasses, a good cell phone, listening to cool music, a MySpace group that forces you to prove how cool you are, and then a discussion of some book called The Tipping Point on how new ideas become widely accepted.Because that's not very cool. Anyway, my point is that when 'cool' has come to mean 'uncool' and 'uncool' has become something you prove yourself as being so that you can be cool, we are in a strange place. That being said, I'll play along.
1. As has been hinted at before, I'm a geographile. I can recite the capitals of the 50 states, the 13 Canadian Provinces and Territories (although the new one Nunavut still causes me problems sometimes), and pretty much all the national capitals of the world (with the exception of the Lesser Antilles and Oceania, because really, that's just too many islands to keep track of). I also really enjoy maps. This is uncool because being cool requires that one maintains an aloof superscilious attitide towards all things (except one's appearance) at all times. By learning capitals and studying maps I have demostrated interest in things outside of my immediate. -5 cools
2. I found the use of 'can' as a bare verb in both Lucia's and 11Frogs' posts exciting. It's not cool to get excited. Especially about verbs. -6 cools
3. I do the NY Times crossword everyday, even though after Thursday I can rarely finish. Not only is the NY Times not cool (lack of aloofness), newspapers themselves aren't cool (too learny), nor is continuing to do something you can't succeed at cool. -4 cools
4. I know that the grammaticality of the following sentences means that I have unrestrictive quantifier binding:
Every boy's sister opened his mail.and I am curious if they are grammatical for you as well (are they?). I'll just go ahead and say it, Linguistics isn't cool. -2 cools
Alice talked about every director's report and his possible resignation.
Total: 17 points less than cool.

My Favorite Hoarding
This topic was difficult for me. I am no minimalist, I'm not even a Moderatilist. I have a lot of things and I like most of them. Inside I know that I could rival Darcy in her Consumer ways. That being said, I had several thoughts about what my favorite possession is.
First I thought of my camera. The immediate problem here is that I've owned a lot of different cameras. And more relevantly, it's really the pictures I like so much, not the camera. As collections of things were declared illegal, that excluded my collection of pictures, which was my second thought. As well as my collections of mustards, sweaters, and socks. My 3rd, 4th, and 5th thoughts respectively. Next my grandfather's globe from 1943 came to mind. This had a number of things going for it:
1. It was my grandfather's and he's dead now.
2. I really like maps (see previous post).
3. The political boundaries of the world were very different in 1943 than they are from today, 1939, and 1946.
4. It lights up.
Anyway, I really like the globe, and I've had it since I was a kid. But I don't think it's actually my favorite possession. That has to go to this picture:Anyone who's ever lived with me certainly recognizes it, since it's hung in my room since it was taken. Both of the older Barnebey children have similar poster sized prints around somewhere. Unfortunately the negatives to these have been lost, so there's no reprinting them. Last year I had it framed as the previous 6 years of apartment/dorm living had been particularly hard on it. Now I like it even more.
I think this explains a lot about me.

A Brief Essay

My people are from Wales. And England. There's also some German in there from my Mom's side. These are the Dreizigackers. Or at least they used to be since there were only 2 daughters in that family. Now what's not Barnebey is Hall. And the Hall's are Mormon. In general I do not consider Mormon's my people. In fact I don't consider religious people my people. I don't understand them. Republicans aren't my people either, but not because I don't understand them, just because I don't agree with them. Which is very different, but has the same result.
Things that do encourage my camaraderie: playing games, eating cheese, telling smart but not pretentious jokes, telling pretentious jokes but facetiously, trying new things, appreciating good food unaffectedly, drinking Coors Light, and using a Macintosh during the mid-late '90s.
Incidentally, linguistics students are rarely my people. On the other hand linguistics professors typically are. This has both good and bad implications.
