More Plays; More Densities

It's not like I'm going to stop talking about this awesome thing I came up with. The latest from the density factory:

A new hit:
Hot N' Fun (Ft. Nelly Furtado) - N.E.R.D.

An old hit:
I Want Love - Elton John

And a taste of what'll make it onto The Densitometer next week:
Bang Pop - Free Energy

I've got some news for you:

Two can play at this game. I'm in the midst of my biggest Play Density reshuffling since version 2.0 was released. It's an exciting time over here. Surprises? Only one: how did Fembot not make it any higher up the list?

25000, 64 Days, 88 GB

My electronic music collection started in the fall of '99 when I went to college and got my own computer. I wish I knew what song #1 was; probably something by The Beatles, or Bon Jovi. Or maybe Boyz II Men. Definitely something with a 'B' though. Unfortunately, due to a hard drive failure in the spring of 2004, my records only date back to May 18th of that year—2 days after graduating from college. In those 5 years I'd added just under 2500 songs to my iTunes library. It took another 6 to increase that by a factor of 10.

Assuming the slightly arbitrary start date of September 1st, 1999, it's been 3,840 days since that original song. Or put another way, an average of 6.5 songs per diem. And that's a startling statistic.

Song #25,000:
Les Yeux Noirs - Django Reinhardt

Le FĂȘte des Moutardes

Mustard Rainbow
The best thing about going to a mustard-themed party, besides actually going to the party, is the  mustarderie. Have you ever even seen that much mustard before‽ No you haven't.

A little more mustardganda to make you feel like you should have been there:

More Mustard medias:

Too Old To Cut the Mustard - Rosemary Clooney & Marlene Dietrich

Cover me, I'm Goin' In

Songs I found on YouTube last week:

This Must Be the Place (Cover) - Miles Fisher
Party & Bullshit in the USA - Notorious B.I.G. & Miley Cyrus

I don't know why it's taken me so long to find them but I've been working on making up for it.

Sweater Road

Sweater Road

It's been a hard day's night. I don't usually count my sweaters, I've got Joanna for that, but oh(!) darling, something's really happened here. This current round of sweatering has been going on since October, which means we've been through a lot of knitwear together. By now we've been here, there, and everywhere; but now here comes the sun. Barring any mid-May cold snaps, this feels like the end of my '08-'09 Sweatering Season. It'll be nice to not carry that weight of organizing these photo shoots every week anymore; it's hard to get us all to come together sometimes. I'll miss the sweaters though. And the camaraderie.

To finish this up I put on four of my v-necks that haven't made it out on Thursday yet this year— a blue, a heather grey, a black, and an eggshell. Or maybe it's a taupe. Who cares.

You've seen two of these sweaters before, either in an array of sweaterness or back in the days of Scrabulous.

Ain't Nobody Gonna Break MY Stride

Last night I had the strangest dream
I sailed away to China, in a little rowboat to find ya
And you said you had to get your laundry clean
Didn't want no one to hold you, what does that mean? And you said...

Ain't nothing gonna break my stride
Nobody gonna slow me down, oh no
I got to keep on moving
Ain't nothing gonna break my stride
I'm running and I won't touch ground, oh no
I got to keep on moving

You're on the road and now you pray you'll last
The road behind was rocky
But now you're feeling cocky
You look at me and you see your past
Is that the reason why you're running so fast? And she said...

{chorus}

Never let another girl like you whip me over
Never let another girl like you drag me under
If I meet another girl like you I will tell her
Never want another girl like you have to say - oh!

Ain't nothing gonna break my stride
Nobody gonna slow me down, oh no
I got to keep on moving
Ain't nothing gonna break my stride
I'm running and I won't touch ground, oh no
I got to keep on moving

Before we get to the sweatering, is anyone else listening to as much Kanye and Akon as I am right now? 808s and Freedom? Both are seeing some serious action by The Barnebey Collection's playcount department. On the female side, I can't really get enough Cyndi Lauper's Into the Night Life and Linda Ronstadt's Silver Threads and Golden Needles. They are lighting it up.

That brings us, and me, to the Linguistics Department reading room/library. Typical activities in this room include printing the semi-quarterly department newsletter (bottom left), reading scholarly journals (back center), lounging on small pieces of furniture (front center), putting the unabridged dictionary on high shelves (back right), and completing the Thursday NY Times crossword (bottom right).

Here is what I would look like while doing all those things, to a zombie wearing night vision glasses.

I listen to NPR...

It's true. I listen all the time. Usually to WHYY out of Philadelphia, although sometimes I have to switch over to WXXI out of Rochester to get Diane Rehm. Today, Weekend Edition introduced me to These United States. Have you heard of them? I actually paid for some of their songs today. Joanna, I expect you especially to enjoy these.

That 3rd quarter, so loose.

For any who haven't heard the magic that is Cribshitter:

They do sweet songs too:

And sing the classics:

Thanks Joanna.

Joanna put one of this guy's songs on her xojojo mix CD. It's sort of changed my life, I listen to him every morning. Also, I expect Alex will really dig this. I'm trying to build e-bridges.

The Postman Always Rings Twice...

Our post arrives reliably sometime between 12:30 and 12:45 PM, Monday through Saturday. Unfortunately I teach a class from 12:05 to 12:55 on Fridays. I assumed this meant that I was going to miss the delivery of my camera today. I did let my students out at 12:45 today, but I still had a 10 minute walk ahead of me. Things did not look good. While trekking home I listened to a mix of Mika, Rhianna, and Alicia to keep my spirits up. And of course 'Mr. Postman' by Lil' Wayne, because it seemed appropriate.I got home to see the mail already in our little mailbox. Inside was a familiar yellow card from the USPS, which I assumed was informing me that they had my camera still. I was dejected. And my feet were wet form the walk home. I went inside, took off my shoes, and found a package by door! My day was looking up. On top of that I found some pictures of this delightful little group on my camera, who I can only assume were involved in its rescue.

The camera is now happily charging on my desktop. It's slightly worse for wear, missing all of the pictures from the night it lost its way, but after 40 days it's home.

Brown on Brown (with Blue)

I got back to Wisconsin Wednesday night. It was an interesting trip with Kermit; only one conversation got uncomfortable (when a 40 year old man tried to buy Kermit from me), the security peeps loved him, and there were pictures taken by two different groups. I like pictures. Also, I'm just going to go ahead and say it, I like Rihanna. "Breakin' Dishes" and "Please Don't Stop the Music" formed the basis of my traveling soundtrack.

I wore this sweater today mainly because I knew that nobody else was going to see me (I only left my apartment to get milk, bread, and bratwurst from Trader Joe's down the street). It is both one of the oldest sweaters in my collection and one of the very few XL items I own. Also, it's a turtleneck.
